Category specific criteria:

This award is given to the project that can best demonstrate its environmental credentials, be it in the use of low carbon building techniques, provision for local flora and fauna or helping local people to become more environmentally aware and responsible. Entries may be physical, economic or social regeneration schemes.

Award for the best use of heritage in regeneration

Category specific criteria

This award is presented to the project that shows how an area’s heritage can be used as a key asset in successful regeneration. To be eligible, a scheme must either involve the conservation/preservation of historic buildings or a wider area, or in other ways capitalise on a place’s or community’s history. Winners will be able to produce robust evidence as to how their scheme has helped regenerate an area’s community, economy or environment.

 Award for the best use of arts and culture in regeneration

This award is given to project that puts arts and culture at the heart of its regeneration strategy, be it through new or refurbished facilities such as concert halls or art galleries, or through increasing participation among local residents.

Award for regenerating rural communities

This award exists to celebrate projects that have successfully dealt with threats to rural communities, including a lack of affordable housing and poor access to employment. To be eligible, a project must be able to demonstrate how it has effectively tackled the problems facing a rural community and contributed to its physical, social and economic situation.

 Award for community empowerment

 Category specific criteria:

This award goes to the project that can best how the local population were involved in conceiving, designing and managing a regeneration project or programme. To be eligible, a project must be able to demonstrate how residents were empowered to take charge and deliver a regeneration project in which they and their neighbours have a real sense of ownership.

 This award celebrates public sector or voluntary sector backed projects that have made a valued contribution to their community’s economic prosperity, be it through tackling worklessness, increasing local people’s skills levels, encouraging entrepreneurship, attracting investment, or other methods.

 This award celebrates work that combines a town or city’s economic, social and physical assets and needs in shaping its future development. It will be awarded to the entry that demonstrates the greatest positive social, economic and environmental impact that can be attributed to the use of strategic town and country planning skills.

 This award will be given to the entry that can demonstrate the highest standards of design. The winner should be able to demonstrate how the scheme’s design helped improve the area in which the scheme is based, whether by attracting investment, improving people’s self-esteem, raising the design standards of other local schemes, or by some other factor. To be eligible, a significant part of the development must be complete and either occupied or ready for occupation.

Award for the best use of housing in regeneration

Category specific criteria:

 This award is given to the entry that most clearly demonstrates the role that new or renewed housing plays in improving the physical, economic and social propects of a neighbouthood. To be eligible, a significant part of the development must be complete and either occupied or ready for occupation. The entry needs to make clear how many housing units it is planned to provide, and the planned mix of tenures. It also needs to make clear how many homes have been completed, and how these break down in terms of tenure.

 This award is given to the project that best combines a mix of uses, such as housing, commercial and retail, in its approach to regeneration. It will be awarded to the project that most clearly demonstrates regeneration impact (or the probability of it), whether through environmental, design, social or economic improvements. To be eligible, a significant part of the development must be complete and either occupied or ready for occupation.

Award for partnership working

 Category specific criteria:

 This award is given to the project or team that can demonstrate how drawing on individuals and teams from a wide array of organisations, backgrounds and disciplines can make a significant contribution to regeneration. Entries must be able to demonstrate the roles and achievements of all partners involved, and demonstrate how the partnership achieved something that wouldn’t have been possible had the partners been working alone.

 Volunteer of the year

 This award is given to a non-regeneration professional for their outstanding commitment to the regeneration of their community. It is awarded to the individual who has made has made the most notable impact on a deprived community or communities in the eligibility period.

 Award for lifetime achievement

 This award is given to an individual for their contribution to regeneration. Nominations for this award will be considered alongside nominations made by the judging panel. The judges will be seeking to identify an individual whose career has had an outstanding regenerative impact on a deprived community or communities.

  Grand-prix

 This award is given to project that the judges feel stands out among all winners as making the most valuable contribution to regeneration in 2011. This award cannot be entered directly. The Chairman of the Judges and the Editor of Regeneration & Renewal will decide on the entry considered to be the cream of the crop of the organisation, scheme or individual category winners.
